There are a number of historical and archaeological monuments to be found amidst a spectacular landscape of mountains and sea. Dolphins are often seen in Dunmanus Bay or why not book a trip out along the coastline of West Cork to see whales.
There is a magnificent drive starting outside Bantry along the Goat's Path on the North side of the Sheep's Head Peninsula, and back through Kilcrohane, Ahakista passing the Air India Air Disaster Memorial and then on to Durrus. Contrast the sheer cliffs and the stark beauty on the north side of the Peninsula where the sunsets are breathtaking with the lusher south side which runs alongside Dunmanus Bay.
The Sheep's Head is a peaceful, unspoilt peninsula which has some of the most beautiful scenery in all of Ireland and because of its proximity to the Gulf Stream, it also has perhaps the mildest climate in Ireland - it is not uncommon to see daffodils out in January!
From Lower Caher House wander down to Tra Rhuiam, past the pre-famine burial ground - perhaps spot a seal or two! Walk back via the Alice West Centre at the Black Gate which is a museum focusing on the life and art of Alice West and displays local artefacts, crafts and artwork - Alice bequeathed her estate to the local community to enjoy.
The Sheep's Head Cafe (otherwise known as Bernie's Cafe) is situated at the very end of the Peninsula and is a great place to stop for a cup of tea/soup/sandwiches whilst visiting the lighthouse at the end - next stop America!
Take a trip to Carbury Island to visit the seal colony. For the serious angler all day sea fishing is available at Dooneen Pier close by - there is plenty of Pollack and Mackerel to be caught and night sessions will produce a good variety including; Dogfish, Bull Huss, Conger Eels, and Whiting.
